Art birthday parties for kids

On Thursday, January 29, the Columbia Museum of Art will host a lecture with African American artists and art curators to give museum members a sneak peak of two upcoming exhibitions for spring 2016.

The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at at the Columbia Museum of Art, 1515 Main St., and is presented through the museum’s affiliate Friends of African American Art and Culture program.

The evening will begin with a lecture from Victoria Cooke, the museum’s curator of African American Art. Members will be able to find out more about the two exhibits.

The first upcoming exhibition is REMIX: Themes and Variations in African-American Art, which includes paintings by 20th century artists Hale Woodruff and Charles White and contemporary works by sculptors Willie Cole and Renee Stout and painters Fahamu Pecou and Mickalene Thomas.

The second exhibition will run concurrently with REMIX and will feature modern and contemporary work from CMA’s collection of African-American Art.

Following Cooke’s lecture, there will be a conversation with South Carolina artists Tarleton Blackwell, Michaela Pilar Brown, Larry Lebby and Dr. Leo Twiggs.

The Columbia Museum of Art regularly hosts events dedicated to art that are appropriate for all community members. They also hold art classes for children and adults through their Learn and Play series — a great way to get the kids out of the house and away from the TV or computer, which they spend roughly 7-1/2 hours in front of each day.

The event on January 29 is free for FAAAC members. Joining the FAAAC is easy: in addition to museum membership, members can pay a small additional fee to have access to these events and exhibitions.

Membership for the museum is $50 per year for individuals and $75 for couples and families, or $250 for patrons. Membership to the FAAAC is $15 for individuals and $25 families and patrons.

Those who aren’t already museum and/or FAAAC members will be ale to sign up at the door before the event.
