Top prep schools

Late summer mean is prime to starting preparing for the school year ahead, and that means deciding what to take to boarding school. Although back to school shopping can be really exciting, it can also seem a bit overwhelming, especially if this is your first time away from home or you’re unfamiliar with preparatory schools in general.

Although private boarding schools go above and beyond to prepare students and families, it can still be difficult to determine what is best to take along with you. Pack too much, and you’re space will feel cluttered. Pack too little, and you’ll regret not packing enough. Although each boarding school has their own specific guidelines, here are a few important basics that should be on your list of what to take to boarding school this year:

Comfortable bedding

Comfortable bedding is a must for any boarding school student, especially given how much rest busy students need to recharge. Opt for high quality bedding that’s hypoallergenic and durable enough for regular washing. Packing at least two sets of super comfortable sheets can help you save time on doing laundry. Be sure to check with the student life office to confirm you have the correct mattress size. In addition to sheets, you should also bring a mattress cover, pillows, and a warm blanket or comforter.

Quality toiletries

Having high quality personal hygiene products can make life at boarding school a lot easier and hassle free. In addition to the basics such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash, be sure to bring shower sandals, and a bathroom tote to carry and store your toiletries. In addition to the basics, you should also consider bringing essentials such as moisturizer, acne cream, sunscreen, cotton swabs, and anything else you use on a regular basis.

Laundry supplies

Many first-timers to boarding school underestimate exactly how much laundry they will be doing. Many boarding schools require their students to meet certain appearance and uniform standards, and that means doing a lot of laundry. While some boarding schools provide laundry services, many still require their students to do their own. In addition to laundry detergent and a hamper, be sure to bring clothes drying rack, lint roller, and a small sewing kit.

Having all these items on hand will make the school year a lot easier, allowing you to focus on what’s important: your studies.
