Having Trouble Choosing College Housing? Here’s Why You Should Live Near Campus

The college experience inevitably comes with a world of change. One major decision you’ll make involves where you’ll live, and while it may seem like it won’t have a major effect on your overall lifestyle, there are actually several ways your living situation can influence your academic success. Here are just a few reasons to live near your college campus.

Cost-Efficiency
At private four-year colleges, the average price of room and board has increased 47% in the past 10 years. With that in mind, there’s no wondering why so many students are exploring their off-campus housing options. Fortunately, many apartments for college students are located close to campus for optimal college living, yet they’re more reasonably priced to reflect your budget. Students get the best of both worlds while getting much more space than most dorms offer. In fact, according to a recent study by real estate website Trulia, at 15 of the 20 schools they examined, sharing a two-bedroom off-campus apartment was cheaper than living in the dorms.

Design/Layout Flexibility
It’s no secret that in addition to being cramped and costing more, most college dorms on a campus have similar layouts, if not exactly identical. There may be a few options, but you won’t get more space unless you pay increased college living fees. But when you explore off-campus living options, you’re sure to find a much wider range of styles, layouts, and designs when it comes to student apartments. According to a survey of 7,095 graduate and undergraduate students, having access to their own bathroom (76%) was ranked as the top design feature in an ideal apartment for students, and if there are any specific college living requirements you have as a student, you’re likely to be able to find a place that perfectly reflects your accommodation needs.

Access to Campus Resources
Finally, living close to — but not actually on — your college campus allows you to take maximum advantage of all the resources your tuition costs are paying for. You’ll be closer to the library, academic buildings, and other educations tools to help you succeed. These resources aren’t as easily accessible for those who live farther from campus.

Ultimately, these are just a few of the many compelling reasons to consider looking for student housing close to your college campus. For more information about fully-furnished student apartments, contact The Legacy at Powelton Village.
