Working as a nurse in the local ER can be incredibly satisfying and rewarding, but does come with its own challenges. It’s great to save lives but the other side of the coin is that you’ll have that weight on your shoulders each day. Here are some useful tips to get you through the start of your ER nurse career.

Firstly, you’ll have to be able to think fast. Every second counts in the emergency room, so you’ll have to be able to quickly identify problems and know the steps to take to remedy them. This means you’ll always have to be alert and awake on the job, as lives depend on it.

You also want to be able to know how to handle stress. The emergency room is fast-paced and when a patient comes in, the pressure is on. This can weigh on a lot of people and it requires a lot of mental strength to thrive in this job.

If you are a quick thinker and work well under pressure, this might be the job for you if you like helping people. Make sure you’ll be able to handle the job before you start working towards this goal. If you think you can’t, there are many other fields in which you can’t help people without such a high level of pressure!
