This Is How Recycling Works

We get preached at all the time to reduce, reuse, and recycle, but what exactly happens when we recycle something? It’s kind of a mystery. We have to separate our trash into different bins only for it to be picked up in the same truck as the rest of the trash. Then, we see recycled products on the shelves at the store. Let’s learn the process.

When something is recycled, it’s broken down into a material that can be used to make something else. Each different type of material needs to be broken down in a way that is conducive to that material.

Wood gets broken down into wood shavings but glass just gets broken down into tiny fine glass sand.

When the garbage truck takes your home recyclables, they’re actually kept separated in the garbage truck. That way it is easier for the truck to unload the recyclables into the proper place when it gets to its final location.

In the end, recycling is very important if you want to help reduce waste. It’s one of the most effective day-to-day things that we can do as a society to keep our landfills as empty as possible. For more information, check out Hank Green’s video.
